The day includes breakout sessions/workshops, a self-care corner, expert keynote speakers, and the opportunity to interact with other parents and caregivers who have children, youth, and young adults with mental health conditions. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
Keynote speaker for the adult track will be Dr. Russell Barkley, Ph.D., a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at The Virginia Treatment Center for Children and VCU. Dr. Barkley is a clinical scientist, educator, and practitioner who has published 23 books, rating scales, and clinical manuals numbering 41 editions. Dr. Barkley has presented more than 800 invited addresses internationally and appeared on nationally televised programs such as 60 Minutes, the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, CNN, and many other programs on behalf of those with ADHD.
This year’s youth keynote speaker is Ronnie Sydney, II, LCSW. Ronnie Sidney, II, LCSW, a Virginia native, is an award-winning author, professional speaker, consultant, and licensed therapist. In third grade, the author-therapist was diagnosed with a learning disability (dysgraphia and ADHD) and spent seven years in special education. Sidney’s early academic challenges ignited a passion within him to pursue social justice and to work with youth.
The Summit is a free one day event for families in Virginia dealing with mental health and co-occurring challenges. The focus of the Summit is to promote parent and youth voice through knowledge, skills and networking. Our speakers and workshops are selected in partnership with a parent and caregiver planning committee to maximize opportunities to gather resources on mental health, services and supports, latest trends and leadership development. The Summit is broken into three tracks: Parent/Caregiver Track, High School Track, Middle School Track. This day of learning is held annually in the spring.
